Job Title: Controls Engineer / Automation Engineer
Location: Primarily Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI
Travel: Regional travel required (25–40%)
Position Overview:
Hands-on role combining electrical, controls, and mechanical support for capital projects and productivity improvements on stamping presses and other manufacturing equipment. The role requires strong troubleshooting skills for both electrical control systems and mechanical issues due to limited electrician support on-site. Safety and reliability are top priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
• Install, wire, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and control systems on stamping presses and production equipment.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical issues such as misalignments, worn components, hydraulic or pneumatic system issues, and mechanical failures affecting automated equipment.
• Perform mechanical adjustments, component replacements, and preventive maintenance related to control systems.
• Lead equipment commissioning and resolve problems quickly to minimize downtime.
• Follow strict electrical safety protocols including NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, and arc flash procedures.
• Maintain updated electrical and mechanical documentation after project and maintenance work.
Qualifications:
• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Technology or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• Journeyman Electrician’s Card strongly preferred due to the field and safety-critical nature of the role.
• 1–3+ years industrial experience with electrical controls and mechanical troubleshooting, ideally working with stamping presses or similar heavy manufacturing equipment.
• Comfortable working with 480V power and low-voltage controls; basic PLC knowledge required.
• Willingness to travel between Chicago and Milwaukee area plants.
Preferred: Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar tools, capital project support, and a focus on continuous improvement.
